Copyright
What exactly do you mean by "educational purposes"?
There are guidelines established for the use of copyrighted works in schools and other "instruction". This is not to be confused with copies made for a choir or band from which they would "learn" the song. Those uses would still require royalty payment.
Is it okay for churches and Christian Fellowships to use your songs for worship without payment or permission?
No. You can sing out of existing books, etc. - but if you make any additional copies to hand out/create an overhead/print the lyrics in a bulletin/etc. - all of that must be licenses and paid for.
Can churches keep copies of your lyrics for use during worship?
It depends. If you receive permission to create a handout or make copies of the song - you will either be charged a licensing rate that allows you to keep those copies and reuse - or you will be charged a nominal rate and instructed to destroy the copies after one use. All of this you would discuss with the owner of the song when you applied for permission.
We know that it is illegal, but since most Christian artists produce music to bring people closer to God, won't the increased circulation of their material through piracy fulfill this purpose?
It is illegal - yes, artists produce music to bring people closer to God - but, it is also the way they make their money to live.
Who holds the copyrights for traditional Christian worship songs for example "Amazing Grace", "Jesus Loves Me", etc?
Most of these songs would have fallen into the Public Domain and therefore can be used without permission or payment. However, you must always be diligent to know if you are in fact using the original which is public domain - or whether you have chosen to use an arrangement of the original. If you are using an arrangement - it would be under copyright by someone and you would be required to pay royalties for it's use. I am unable to tell you who holds the copyright, because there are many arrangements, owned by many different people on the songs you have mentioned. It would be up to the user to research the song (using copyright notices on product, etc.) and submit permission requests appropriately.

Illegal File Sharing
Is illegal file sharing really such a problem?
For the past four years, sales and shipments of recorded music have been plummeting - and the downward trend shows no sign of abating. At the same time, sales of blank CD-R disks (the kind you copy music onto) have been soaring, and that dovetailed with the widespread illegal use of file-sharing. So, yes, it really is a problem.
Who says that unauthorized sharing of music through peer-to-peer networks is illegal?
Federal law and a string of court decisions. Federal copyright statutes (specifically, Sections 501 and 506 of Title 17 of the United States Code) and the “No Electronic Theft” (NET) Act provide penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, rental or digital transmission of copyrighted sound recordings. Moreover, an unbroken series of court decisions - most recently, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc., et al. v. Grokster, Ltd., et al., and in RIAA v. Verizon Internet Services Inc. - has affirmed that “sharing” copyrighted music files over peer-to-peer networks without the copyright holder’s permission constitutes “direct infringement.”
Aren’t most downloaders merely sampling music that they later wind up buying?
If this were true, music sales would be soaring, given the astronomical increases in peer-to-peer file sharing. Music consumption has never been higher, but unfortunately, an increasing segment of the population is stealing instead of paying for it.
Don’t people have a right to make copies of their CDs?
It depends on the circumstances. Certainly, consumers may be able to make a limited number of copies for their own personal use. But no one has the right to offer to distribute copyrighted music to millions of people through online peer-to-peer networks without the copyright holder’s permission.
Why should I pay for music from an authorized site when I can download it for free from a peer-to-peer network?
Unauthorized downloading is just as illegal as shoplifting, and it is every bit as wrong. Not only does it rob recording artists and songwriters of their livelihoods - and threaten the jobs of tens of thousands of less celebrated people in the music industry, from engineers and technicians to warehouse workers and record store clerks - it also undermines the future of music by depriving the industry of the resources it needs to find and develop new talent. What’s more, when you download from an authorized site, you can be sure of getting a complete recording of the highest quality.

License
I would like to use one of your songs for a project I am working on. How do I receive permission for that?
Music Services, Inc., handles the licensing and administration of over 30,000 musical compositions, including those owned by EMI Christian Music Group, Inc. The Music Services website is located at www.musicservices.org. We recommend that your visit the FAQ page.
To request copyright permission to use an EMI-owned or controlled musical composition:
Requests for permission to record an EMI-owned or controlled song, make photocopies of sheet music, etc., can be made through Music Services' website. The website features a searchable online database which greatly simplifies the licensing process.
If you are requesting permission to record with an EMI-owned or distributed accompaniment track (Premiere Performance, Sparrow, Forefront, Star Song), PLEASE NOTE that accompaniment tracks cannot be licensed for recordings. Performance tracks are manufactured and distributed for use in live performances only.
To request permission to use an EMI-owned recording on your project:
Requests for permission to use an EMI-owned recording (i.e., recordings released by Sparrow Records, ForeFront Records, Gotee Records, Tooth & Nail Records, BEC Recordings, UpRok, SolidState or Mono vs. Stereo) on your project are reviewed individually. All requests must be submitted in writing to emi@musicservices.org or via fax to 615-371-1351 and must contain the following information:
- The title of song
- The title of the CD on which the recording appears
- The name of the artist/group
